The Look of Stone in a Single Pour

Stamped concrete in Norman is most often a backyard patio, a front entry or a decorative border along a driveway. It is regular concrete, poured on the same compacted base as any other slab, then colored and pressed with textured mats while it is still workable, so it comes out looking like flagstone, slate, brick or cut stone. Because it is one continuous slab, it has no joints for weeds to grow in and no separate pieces to settle unevenly.

Patterns and colors

Common choices include random flagstone, ashlar slate (rectangular stones in a mix of sizes), cobblestone, running-bond and herringbone brick, and wood-plank textures. Color comes from two layers:

  • Base color: either mixed into the whole batch or broadcast onto the surface as a color hardener
  • Release color: a contrasting powder or liquid used during stamping that settles into the low spots, which gives the pattern depth

In Norman's sun, warm tans, sandstone and terra-cotta shades fit the red soil and brick houses, and lighter shades stay cooler underfoot than dark charcoal.

Why stamped work needs a careful crew

Stamping is time sensitive. The crew has to color, texture and press the whole slab in the window between pouring and setting, and on a 95-degree afternoon that window shrinks fast. That is why we start stamped pours early in the morning in summer, bring enough hands to finish on time and size each pour so it can be stamped before it sets.

Joints still matter. A stamped slab on clay soil will move like any other, so we cut joints along the pattern lines where they are hard to see.

Sealing and upkeep

Sealer protects the color from sun and wear and brings out the contrast between base and release colors. Stamped surfaces need resealing every few years, more often in full sun or heavy traffic. Some sealers get slippery when wet, so on pool decks and steps we add a grit to the sealer for traction.

Stamped overlays

If you have an existing patio or walk that is structurally sound, a stamped overlay can change its look without tearing it out. HomeGuide's resurfacing guide notes that overlays are not the answer for slabs with large cracks, crumbling or structural problems; those need replacement. We check the old slab first and tell you which way makes sense.

Where stamped concrete works best

Patios, front entries, walkways, pool surrounds and driveway borders are the usual spots. On a whole driveway, we often recommend stamping only the borders and leaving the main lanes broom finished, because a broom finish is easier to keep clean and gives better grip.

Stamped Concrete Questions

Is stamped concrete slippery?

It can be when wet, mostly because of the sealer. We add an anti-slip grit to the sealer on pool decks, steps and sloped walks.

Does stamped concrete crack?

Any concrete on clay soil can crack. We use the same stone base, reinforcement and planned joints as on plain slabs and place the joints along pattern lines so they are hard to see.

How often does stamped concrete need sealing?

Every few years in most cases, more often in full sun or heavy traffic. HomeGuide's driveway guide suggests resealing decorative concrete every 2 to 3 years.

Can you stamp my existing patio?

If it is sound, a stamped overlay can go over it. If it has large cracks, has sunk or is crumbling, replacement is the better choice.
