Concrete for Harrah Homes and Acreages
Harrah is on the far eastern edge of Oklahoma County, about 25 miles east of downtown Oklahoma City, and the concrete contractors in Harrah work on a mix of town lots and wooded acreage. The 2020 census counted 6,245 residents, up 22.6 percent from 2010, one of the faster growth rates in the eastern metro. We pour and replace driveways, patios, walks, steps, stamped concrete and slabs for garages, shops and barns.
From Sweeney to Harrah
The first settler, Louis Navarre, a Potawatomi man, arrived in the 1870s. The town was first called Sweeney, after E.W. Sweeney, who ran a ferry starting in 1891, and it was renamed Harrah on December 22, 1898, for Frank Harrah, who bought 40 acres from Navarre's allotment. The remaining reservation land opened to settlers in the 1891 Land Run, and early settlers included many Polish immigrants. Harrah incorporated in 1908 and was a cotton ginning center in the 1940s.
The oldest homes near the center of town often have small, patched drives and walks. On those lots, we usually replace failed sections and match the finish of what remains.
Growth since 1970
Harrah had 934 residents in 1960 and 1,931 in 1970, then 2,897 in 1980 and 4,206 in 1990. Those decades produced most of the town's subdivisions, and their concrete is now 35 to 55 years old. Driveway aprons crack where they meet the road, garage approaches settle and patios tip toward the house. The newest wave of growth since 2010 brings different requests: patios, wider driveways and shop slabs for homes on larger lots.
Cross Timbers and storms
Wikipedia places Harrah partly in the Great Plains and in the Cross Timbers ecoregion, and squarely in Tornado Alley. Building in the oaks means planning around roots and shade, and building in Tornado Alley means many homeowners want a storm shelter on a solid slab. We pour pads for above-ground shelters to the maker's requirements, and we lay out driveways and patios to avoid the biggest roots where possible.
On rural lots, long driveways and shop slabs are the most common jobs. A long drive on a wooded lot needs truck access, a plan for each pour section and joints that control cracking. A shop slab needs thickness and reinforcement suited to what will sit on it, and a base compacted well enough to carry it.
